Welcome to my new serie 'Motherhood'. Where every month I will visit a mother who inspires me. I will take pictures of her normal daily life and we talk about motherhood and more...
The very first lady that will start this series is the lovely Britt, I think one of the first moms I started following on Instagram and this is how we came in contact. She has a lovely sense of style but more importantly a very beautiful and inspiring view on the world!

My name is Britt Hughan, since August 2017, that's when the love of my life Armand and I got married after being together for 10 years. In those past 10 years we have traveled, moved to a new city, ran a business and above all build a family with our 2 girls Pearly (6) and Lovis (3). Last year I sold my online boutique Pearls & Swines to focus more on family life and raising our daughters in a way I wasn't able to do while running a business. We have entered a fase of slow living, taking life as it comes, reducing stress levels and make room to grow as people. The past 8 months I have been freelancing for several brands and I think I finally found what I was looking for carrier wise.
You have two beautiful little girls, is there a life lesson/motto that you live by or try to learn your daughters?
Spread love, always. Let love be the guidance in every decision you make.
Love yourself, be honest, be fair. And stay soft, you'll find the right place and people in this world who will truly see and feel you. That's your tribe, your world.

What are the biggest gifts and challenges of motherhood?
Becoming/being a mother swept me off my feet, completely. It brought me the happiest moments of my life this far. It made my love for life and my man stronger and deeper. It erased a lot of issues that were important when there was only me to really worry about. It made life simpler, more beautiful.
My girls are my everything, being their mother gives me a sense of belonging I never felt before. But it brings a lot of new worries too...
I'm never sure if I'm doing things right by them. I'm scared to (pardon my French) fuck them up, to pass my own pain and shortcomings to them.
I'm learning to take better care of myself on all levels and it helps to see things clearer, to do better, be more present, like real present. To feel it all and give them the happy mother they deserve.

Your favorite time of the day?
This depends on the season. During spring/summer I'm an early riser and mornings are my favorite. Fresh coffee in the sun and off to the beach as often and early as we can. During the colder months I love the moment when it's time to lid the candles, get cosy and slowly move into the night.

Do you have any routines surrounding health and beauty?
The past 6 years I have hardly slept more then 3 hours straight, due to my oldest daughter being a difficult sleeper. A very difficult sleeper.
So between being super tired, super busy, there was no time to really take care of myself. I have picked up yoga classes a few times, but I was simply too tired to keep going.
Last year this all changed. Pearly finally started sleeping through the night, I got more free time and started Barre workout classes. I don't think any other sport makes me as happy as I am every sunday morning, while my hands hold de barre and my body moves to the beautiful classic tunes. I was a ballerina until I was 16 and for some reason my body still remembers it all. I'm rusty, less elegant en heavier than 20 years ago, but still... it's all I need to start a new week refreshed and balace.
My diet changed a lot over the years. I think we are now eating 80% plant based. No dairy, no meat. Eating organic and healthy is very important to us.
When it comes to beauty, I'm very basic and working on using only natural products. My favorite brands are Avril, Courtney and the babes and Lavera. I always wear the same Diptyque parfum.
Like I said very basic.

Describe your ideal family day:
Today was a pretty good family day. It started off with my Sunday morning ballet class. When I returned home the girls were bathed and read for lunch.
We played some records, the girls danced and were playing together in their room, while I quizzed in some work. It was a beautiful sunny winter day, so we went outside to hike to the beach. After our hike we were all hungry, so we cooked up a simple meal. After dinner the girls watched Wall-E, while I typed this up

What is your philosophy when it comes to motherhood?
This philosophy changed over the years. I have learned how very important it is to take care of myself, in order to be a good mother. To keep things simple and honest.
The piece 'Model Contentment' from the beautiful Parent's Tao Te Ching says it all:
To be a wise parent you must become like water.
It is content to nourish all it touches without discrimination.
While people struggle to move up,
water flows joyfully down,
filling the low places
As you care for your children keep their environment uncluttered, free of useless gadgets and distractions.
Keep your conversations honest and straight forward, free of control and manipulation.
Keep your decisions fair and generous, free of punishment and shame.
As you conduct your life, be serene and joyful,
content and at peace.
This will be your greatest legacy
Nothing nurtures a child like a parent who takes great pleasure from simple activity,
and is content with the present moment
Are you modeling contentment or always wanting "more"?

Any exciting things coming up/things you are looking forward to?
Oh yes, now that the girls are a bit older, we feel an old dream coming back to us, which is traveling to world. So this year we will kick of with Japan, to visit our dear friends, who have moved there last year. Plus some smaller trips to Stockholm, Paris and Copenhagen.
Traveling with kids is a whole other ball game, but I must admits I love the slower pace, it seems like I now enjoy new places more rather than working my way through a cereal/wallpaper/lonely planet guide and ticking off all the must sees.
